The recent report by the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP)

🌍 The recent report by the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP), authored by Eline Blot, Federico Sgarbi, and Antoine Oger, delves into the hashtagEUhashtagNewZealand hashtagFreeTradeAgreement (FTA) concluded in June 2022, shedding light on its impact on sustainability and the European agricultural sector.

🌿 Key Findings:
hashtagSustainability Commitments: With this new FTA, the EU has elevated sustainability commitments in its FTAs, setting a higher standard. The EU-New Zealand FTA holds both parties accountable to hashtagParisAgreement objectives and core hashtagInternationalLabourOrganisation conventions.
hashtagCooperation on Sustainability: While the FTA emphasizes cooperation on fossil fuel subsidy reform and sustainable food systems, it remains cooperation-based, lacking strong enforceability measures.
– Limited Impact on Sensitive hashtagAgriFood Products: The report concludes that the FTA is not a silver bullet for sustainability issues linked to trade. However, the expected decline in EU beef and sheep meat production by 2030 (1.4%) aligns with broader industry trends influenced by factors like dietary changes, production costs, and climate change.
– Environmental Impacts: Anticipated reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and pollutants accompany the decline in beef and sheep meat production. However, interlinkages with the dairy sector mean emissions may not decrease proportionally.  Employment impacts are also expected to be limited.
– Cooperation for Sustainability: The FTA presents an opportunity for the EU and New Zealand to collaborate on harmonizing sustainability practices and standards in agriculture. This could contribute to resilient food systems, essential in the face of climate change and environmental challenges.
